That an amazing trip. It’s difficult to put into words all that I saw, felt and experienced. However, I’ll share a couple of my big takeaways.
- I was struck by the power of the gospel as we sought to provide for the basic physical needs of some of the people we interacted with. I saw a new level of poverty that I’ve never witnessed. I reinforced the biblical idea that we can’t ignore the physical needs to address the spiritual needs. Christ calls us to feed and clothe those who have nothing and then, in that context, provide the hope that does not fade or whither.

I am more convinced than ever that Missy & I have to be ultra-proactive in order for our kids to get the reality that the world does not revolve around them or around our zip code. I want my kids to think it’s normative to care for the weak, defenseless, and poor – whether they are in Africa or Dallas. I want them to understand that abundance provides an opportunity to bless and share with others (I also want that to be deeply ingrained in my life as well…and one of the realizations is that I’ve still got a long way to go on that). Living in our culture will NOT naturally produce a desire and passion to care for others and so, if Daniel, Caroline, and Abigail are to “get it” it will need to modeled by Missy and me.
There is a lot more from this trip but I’ll stop for now. Here are some pictures from the trip.
