Annual Trip to the Byron

The PGA makes a stop in Dallas this week for the 2012 Byron Nelson & as has been the case for the past 8 years, I took a day to go out and walk the course. For seven of the past eight years D-Lev has been my companion during this annual outing and about 4 years ago we invited C-Lev to join us. So today the three of us headed over the the TPC and spent the day watching golf. The weather was great – no clouds in the sky with a slight breeze during most of the afternoon. We don’t have many official traditions over here at the Leventhal house but I like that this is one of them. I think next year we’ll invite A to join us as well!

Falling from the sky: our dead bird

Yesterday at the Leventhal house we had a minor bird adventure. A baby bird fell out of the nest (or perhaps it was tossed out by the mom?) and landed on our patio. When it hit the ground it was still alive & Missy quickly scrambled to figure out if there was anything that could be done to save its life. Unfortunately, they were not able to save the life of the itty, bitty birdie!

By the time the bird had transitioned to the other side the kids had already named it Tweet. Saddened by the death of this little fella, the kids felt that a burial was the only proper way to honor the short life and so last night, after dinner, the kids and I went out dug a grave & committed the bird to the ground.

And as Missy tucked Lilly in bed last night there was genuine grief about the passing of the bird. Lilly kept asking how the bird was going to get out of the box when it woke up. Missy explained several times that the bird wasn’t going to wake up…that it was dead. Dead, dead…not mostly dead, just dead. Lilly reminded Missy that Jesus rose from the dead so why couldn’t the bird. Sweet girl!

Today is Josh’s birthday – five years old! My oh my how quickly time moves! Happy birthday sweet boy! I love you and I love being your dad! I’m SO THANKFUL that the Lord has given us the great joy of adopting you! You are such a joyful, sweet spirit!

Overheard…

Was out in front of my house tonight. The kid next door (4th grader) was riding his Razor with two other kids (they were brothers). The two brothers were arguing because the kid who’s my neighbor had given one of the brothers an Airsoft Gun.

So you can see where this is going: one gun being given away…two brothers who both wanted it. Best I can tell the kid that was given the gun was the older of the two. I overhead the brothers and their conversation went something like this:

Angry, jaded brother: “I’m telling mom!”
Happy, pistol holding brother: “What are you going to tell her? That gave me a gun…and your mad that you didn’t get one.”
Angry, jaded brother: “Yes!! You already have two Airsoft guns!”

They argued for a while until the angry, jaded brother pulled out a cell phone (what in the world is that kid doing with a cell phone??), called his momma & proceeded to complain to her about the gross injustice he’s been a victim of.

I couldn’t help but chuckle at the angry, jaded brother…so bitter & upset at not getting a gift like his brother.

So entitled.

And then I had this horrible, God-awful realization that I must look the exact same way when I complain about the things I don’t get…and whine about the things that other people receive. All weepy, pathetic & ungrateful.

So. Freakin’. Pathetic.

Lord…save me from me!

Campout with Daniel

This past weekend was the spring camp out with a bunch of third grade boys – many we’ve known for a long time! The weather was perfect – lots of sun and cool, but not overly cold nights. We fished, road bikes, swam in the lake (yes…it was cold), whittled, played kickball, threw the football and other fun stuff! We also welcomed a new tent to the Leventhal family – an 8 person structure I affectionately dubbed the Taj MaThal – bigger, better & more luxurious! Here are some pics from our weekend!
